Served Hot Synopsis:

"Nanyang Delicacies" is an established food stall on the lookout for someone special who can taste the distinctive flavour behind its signature Laksa dish. The one who has the correct answer will be rewarded with the Laksa secret recipe, worth a million dollars. Many have attempted but failed, until the day three boys in their twenties walk into the shop.

Upon tasting the Laksa, they request to see the chef. From that moment on, their lives will never be the same again.

Through the story of three ex-convicts and their entrepreneurial spirit and pursuit of love, the drama uncovers the heritage, secret ingredients and touching stories behind Singapore’s favourite local delicacies. Combining the modern with the traditional, new flavours and recipes are created.

Tai Long, Owen and Hao Lun came to a small Nanyang eatery in a bid to earn the million-dollar Laksa recipe. Tai Long has a gift that allows him to see the different ingredients in each dish. He manages to see the secret of the Laksa and the lady boss, Yueniang, agrees to take him in.

Li Yueniang runs a Nanyang cuisine eatery and is famous for her laksa. Ever since someone offered her $1 million, many people have tried to cheat the recipe out of her. He Tailong, Chen Owen and Zhuang Haolun turn up at the eatery as well. As Tailong is able to detect the special ingredient in the laksa, Yueniang agrees to take him in and impart the recipe to him. He is hesitant, as he cannot cook.

Tai Hu also wanted a share in the secret recipe. He approached Xiaorong and proposed to buy over Nanyang eatery. Tai Hu used his gift and managed to cook the signature Laksa with Meiwei. They let Xiaorong taste their Laksa but she rejected their Laksa and insisted on selling the eatery to Tai Hu.

The three friends find a telephone number in the box, which leads them to Chef Fugui. Fugui turns up at the eatery and makes life difficult for Tailong, Owen and Haolun. Desperate for the laksa recipe and upset that Fugui has been fooling them, they force him to display his culinary skills. Fugui’s daughter, Meiwei, turns up to help him. She shows off her prowess. Even though she prepares delicious laksa, Fugui throws it away and tells her not to try anymore.

The trio finally forced Fugui to cook and he whipped up a plate of fried rice. After eating it, the trio wanted him to teach them but he refused. He stated his terms: they had to cook up a plate of fried rice of certain standard or there would be no room for negotiation.

Taihu is infuriated when Xiaorong decides not to sell the eatery after all. Xiaorong tells the rest that they need other dishes to boost business. Fugui has yet to cook since coming to the eatery. The three friends decide to tail him home to find out more about him. At Fugui’s house, they see a forgetful old man, Zeng Jianwang, who is Fugui’s father. Their attempt to use Jianwang to test Fugui’s culinary skills backfires.

Meiwei wanted to join the trio and learn from Fugui but was fiercely rejected by Fugui. Jian Wang once said that no one else in the Zeng family could become a chef after Fugui. Meiwei refused to buckle under pressure and wants to use her own method to jolt Jian Wangs memory.

Haolun finally proves he is also an important part of the team. Meiwei hopes to take classes with the trio, but Fugui rejects her, as Jianwang had said that after Fugui, the Zengs are forbidden to become chefs. Meiwei tells the three friends that Jianwang ran a wanton noodle stall and had hoped she would be a chef like Fugui. However, everything changed after an unfortunate incident. After disappearing for a few days, Jianwang returned and became forgetful. However, he regains snippets of his memory whenever he gets good food. The three friends decide to feed him char siew.

Tai Hu exposed the fact that Tai Long is the son of Fuguis enemy, He Ting Feng. Fugui was shocked to learn and refused to teach Tai Long. Tai Long had no choice but to leave the eatery and let the rest learn from Fugui. Fugui tasted a soup that Tai Long cooked and was shocked by the taste!

Jianwang agrees to let Meiwei learn cooking. The three friends are shocked when Jianwang lashes out at Fugui for causing the death of someone. They learn how he had caused a severe bout of mass food poisoning in the restaurant years ago. Tailong realises Fugui was Tingfeng’s business partner.

Fugui set up a series of challenges to determine if Tai Long can stay. The first challenge is to cook prawn noodle soup. The second challenge is to cook Char Kuay Teow. On the day of the competition, Meiwei decided to change their approach at the last minute and use their secret weapon!

Fugui decides to give Tailong a chance. If Tailong can defeat Meiwei by preparing dishes that rekindle Jianwang’s memory, he can stay. The first dish being tested is prawn noodle soup. Tailong pairs up with Haolun, and Meiwei with Owen. Both teams work hard. On the day of the competition, the prawns bought by Tailong are poured into the drain. Haolun suspects Owen did it to please Meiwei. Tailong comes up with a solution, even though he has no prawns. Even Meiwei is impressed. Jianwang’s memory is jolted by the prawn noodle soup.

The second round ends in a draw. The last round will determine whether Tailong stays or leaves. The friendship between the friends is being tested as well. Tailong and Meiwei realise they are childhood friends. The third dish is chendol. Fugui knows Meiwei is good at making chendol, and anticipates that Tailong will probably lose this round. Meiwei takes Tailong to different stalls to try delicious chendol, but he does not want to copy others.

For the third challenge, they had to make Chendol. Fugui knew that Meiwei was very good at making Chendol and Tai Long would be of no match for her. Little did he know that Meiwei deliberately performed under her standards to lose to Tai Long, who also coincidentally made bad Chendol.

Tailong learns the powdery substance is a laxative. He stops Taihu from eating the tau suan and expresses his disappointment in Fugui for trying to harm a food tester. Fugui reveals he was the one who threw away the prawns and left the cockles out to rot. He also added the powder to test Tailong’s integrity. Tailong passes the test and returns to the team. Finally, the eatery is ready to open for business. The day before its launch, the three lads worry Taihu will be up to his tricks again.

Meiwei creates a siew mai (meat dumpling) dish with a story. Business picks up, and the television station turns up to interview them. Fugui is skeptical and asserts that fame will get them into trouble. Tingfeng is happy Tailong has shown some progress. He suggests Taihu get Tailong to return to their restaurant. Taihu claims he is preparing a fusion cuisine project and will hand it over to Tailong in due time.

Owen is sent to hospital in a coma. Tailong discovers that Owen went all out to protect his bag, as it contained the notebook Meiwei had given him, in which he recorded all his recipes. He and the others decide to use Owen’s char siew and manage to defeat Gordon Ramy. Gordon Ramy decides to stop working for Taihu. Haolun sees Qingchun with Taihu. Though Qingchun claims they are just good friends, Haolun arranges for her to work in the eatery, so that she cannot be with Taihu.

Meiwei is shocked to learn how Fugui had betrayed the restaurant and caused the death of John’s father. She cannot forgive her father. Tailong is still unable to use his taste buds. Meiwei assumes it is because of his cold, but Tailong recognises he has fully recovered from that. The earlier incident affects business at the eatery. Meiwei tries to regain the customers’ confidence by getting a famous gourmet to test their chef’s recommendations. Tailong ruins the tasting session because of his anxiety.

Haolun uses new methods to draw customers in. Unfortunately, Taihu copies the ideas and operates at a loss to make sure he draws Tailong’s customers away. Meiwei realises they cannot fight Taihu in terms of financial backing, but hopes to win customers over with the quality of their food. Xiangxiang turns up to review the food, with other gourmet writers. Taihu exerts pressure on the reporters and prevents the eatery from placing ads. Xiangxiang is forced to resign.

Qingchun tells Haolun that Taihu has his problems and difficulties. She pities Taihu, who has no support from his family and staff. Haolun assumes she has been conned by Taihu and even suspects her of being the turncoat. He reconciles with his sister when the misunderstanding is cleared.
