Great White Rips Captain Apart In A Few Seconds Scam

Came across the link "Great White Rips Captain Apart In A Few Seconds" on Facebook. Got curious and wanted to take a look. I was scared at the same time.

The Facebook News Post:

Weird thing is, when I clicked, you're requested to share the link before you can view the video. Well I did share the link but I did not get to see the video.

The Facebook Page:

Next, I searched for the video based on the main title on YouTube and saw this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyJ1-XUF3z4
When I clicked on the video, within seconds, I knew I've been "Rick Roll'D". Horrible. I've been scammed! Ahahah. They made use of my stupidity, curiosity and naivety to con me.. Oh well.

This means that the photo had most likely been photoshopped by combining 2 images:
1. Big Shark Image
2. Deep Sea Fishing Image

Anyway I was still pretty curious about sharks and went on to search for real footage on Shark Attacks and came across these 3 great videos:

First 2 videos are real sharks attack attempts at a man swimming and another biting into a boat.

The last video is the best in terms of capturing a shark attack in it's full glory in HD resolution and graphics. But they were recorded via a planned fake bait to resemble a seal.

At the end of this little shark journey, I find the shark really majestic, vicious and graceful at the same time. I am in awe and fear. Not going to the beach for a while.

Giant Monster found on land in Thailand

Saw this video via Yahoo's homepage.
The title read "Did they find a monster in Vietnam?"
Giant Monster found on land in Thailand

Had seen earlier pictures of this, but this is a 2 minute long video.
Can't be fake or a scam I suppose.

On the other hand, the language sounds Thai, I don't think it is in Vietnam.
The speaker says something that sounds like "Ka Proom Kap" at the beginning.

They look like they're trying to lift the giant body up onto a truck.

It's huge!! Just look at the people standing around it and compare their height to it's body.
The fins are awfully small though.

From the report, Officials have released a statement saying that it's a carcass of a whale.

Read from a comment that it is likely a "Baleen Whale"
. Something like this:

Some comments of the video I've found insightful:
1. "It is a whale that swam inland during the storm surge and got trapped when the waters receded. At times, in the video, you can see the baleen in it's mouth."- george ford

I googled "Baleen". Never seen the word before. It means "Baleen is a filter-feeder system inside the mouths of baleen whales."

2. " where is this location? I'm in Vietnam,,i have never heard about this before." - Pham Thu Lan

3. "Does not look like a whale. How did it get to the dry land and since the report said it ha been dug up, how long has this creature lay dead on the dry land? Has rotting start to occur? If yes, should be very smelly but this creature seem to be in one piece and no rotting was seen. Very strange!!!" - Nosey47

Found another related video. But it's a different whale. Looks' much smaller in size.

Mermaid Sighting on Animal Planet Documentary - Is it a Scam?

Are Mermaids Real?

Screenshots from the infamous Viral Video:
Mermaids: The New Evidence

There's a viral video going around Facebook recently.
It shows a quick glimpse of a mermaid/alien looking creature underwater in the deep sea.

Here's the video footage:

Personally, when I saw it, I had to watch it over a few times to analyze it.

Firstly, the video showed a mermaid that looked more like an alien, with huge eyes and a bald head. Which was kinda strange and interesting at the same time. It's a combination of 2 elements I've never envisioned in my mind before. Kudos.

Secondly, the webbed hand on the glass looked really clear on the screen.
Too clear to be precise.
I mean, why was the lighting in bright cyan blue in that area on where the camera focused?

Thirdly, it's quite unbelievable that a spear could be used to catch fish underwater in the deep sea.
The speed of the spear would have been severely be slowed down in deep water, under high pressure.
So after watching the video clip a few times, I was quite skeptical.

I quick search on the net exposed the truth to the video. It was a hoax.

It was apparently a fake documentary made by the producers from Animal Planet.
The producers admitted it was a work of fiction as shown below in an article:

30 May 2013

Excerpt from Article:
" People can't get enough of them -- even if it's a hoax! Animal Planet premiered their special Mermaids: The New Evidence on Sunday, May 26, and the staged documentary set a ratings record for the network."

"Animal Planet managed to hook 3.6 million viewers with the special that speculates about the real-life existence of mermaids using actors, according to ABC News. The special is a sequel to 2012's "documentary," Mermaids: The Body Found.
"We wanted people to approach the story with a sense of possibility and a sense of wonder," Charlie Foley, the show's executive producer, told ABC News. "Hopefully that's what 'Mermaids' allowed viewers to do . . . allowed them to suspend their disbelief."

Another lead to add to the hoax, the original hoax documentary: "Mermaid: The Body Found" had an actor by the name of "Andre Weideman"

If you do a quick Google Search on "Andre Weideman"
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1382718/

You'll find his body of work as follows:

Filmography

Hide HideActor (8 titles)
2012 The Dinosaur Project
Pete Van Aarde

2012 Parys Parys (TV series)
Klein Koos La Grange

2011 Mermaids: The Body Found (TV movie)
Paul (as Andre Louis Weideman)

2010/II Sweetheart (short)
Ogilvy

What this means is that he acted in the supposed "Documentary" as a character.
He was not being himself. It also means it's a fake TV documentary.

Leap Motion - Is it a Scam?

I found www.leapmotion.com on the web while I was researching on touch screen monitors, since I just bought Windows 8. I though it looks very promising. Here's a short video of Leap Motion Technology.

On the website and in some interviews, it's stated that they will release this device to the market in May 2013. It is now 16 April 2013. There's a pre-order page on the web site and I'm itching to buy it, yet I'm afraid that this may turn out to be a scam. Sounds too good to be true. at US$79.99.

Leap Motion (US$79.99) or Touch Screen Monitor (US$899)?
I will wait around for a month more before I dive in.

Some videos on the Dell S2340T 23-inch Multi-Touch Monitor with LED that I was keen on before I chanced upon Leap Motion.

Update on 5 May 2013 :
On the Leap Motion Site, they have indicated that they have postponed the shipment to 22 July 2013.
Hmmm...

Here's an excerpt from the link: http://blog.leapmotion.com/

Release Date Update

25 APRIL, 2013 46 COMMENTS NEWS
I wanted to reach out to update you on the status of our ship date. After a lot of consideration, we’ve decided to push back the date and will now be shipping units to pre-order customers on July 22nd.

This is not a decision we take lightly. There are hundreds of thousands of people in over 150 countries who have pre-ordered Leap Motion controllers, some as long as a year ago. These people are part of our community and there is nothing more important to us than getting them devices as quickly as possible.

We’ve made a lot of progress. When we first started taking orders back in May we were twelve (very tired) people in a basement. Now we are eighty (although still tired and possibly still in a basement). We’ve manufactured over six hundred thousand devices and delivered twelve thousand to amazing developers who are building applications that let people do things that just wouldn’t have been possible before.

These developers have given us great feedback that we’ve used to make huge improvements to the stability and polish of the product. We’re really proud of Leap Motion as both a company and a product.

The reality is we very likely could have hit the original ship date. But it wouldn’t have left time for comprehensive testing. This will come in the form of a beta test that will start in June. We will give the 12k developers who currently have Leap Motion controllers access to the feature complete product including OS interaction (today developers only have access to the SDK). We will also invite some people who are not developers to join the beta test.

Ultimately, the only way we felt 100% confident we could deliver a truly magical product that would do justice to this new form of interaction, was to push the date so we would have more time for a larger, more diverse beta test.

I really appreciate your patience. I know it’s been a long wait. Everyone at Leap Motion is working tirelessly to make sure that the wait is worth it. Thanks so much for your help and support.

David and I will be participating in an open video Q&A using Google Hangout tomorrow at 11:30am Pacific time. To join our hangout, please visit our Google+ page. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact our support team at support@leapmotion.com or my personal email (buckwald@leapmotion.com). As always, we will not charge pre-order customers’ credit cards until the devices have actually shipped.

Thanks again.

Michael Buckwald"Sounds very suspicious to me. I have my doubts. Let's wait till July 2013 for more news.

Update: 26 July 2013

I've already gotten my touch screen monitor from Acer.
But decided to check back on the Leap Motion Delivery that was slated for 22 July.

Quick Search on the web and here's a good link for reference
from a writer at ZDnet published on 23 July:
http://www.zdnet.com/leap-motion-begins-shipping-about-a-year-ahead-of-its-time-7000018410/

Excerpt:
"
The Leap Motion controller began shipping this weekend and I received mine in the mail today. Although some people that place pre-orders got theirs over the weekend, Leap just posted the software today. "

"It's early yet, but I like what I see. It feels like the future.
Leap Motion is novel in these early days but I can't wait to see what kind of innovative applications are developed to exploit its innovative sensors. Someday when motion sensors are built into every computer (Leap Motion has announced partnerships with HP and ASUS), it's conceivable that we won't touch our computers at all, but instead just point, swipe and gesture in the air in front of them.

But I have not seen many articles written by real users beyond the ones written by editors.
