SHOW PLOT SYNOPSIS:
Hakka immigrant, Shitou, sails to Nanyang to work as a tin miner and lives a thrifty life.
Three years later, he returns to his hometown to marry his childhood sweetheart, Yazi.
Shortly after their marriage, the couple returns to Nanyang by boat.
Also on board, are two penniless brothers, Zhang Tianpeng and Zhang Tianying, who seek to make a fortune in Nanyang. Unfortunately, young brother Tianying has just gotten on board before he falls ill and passes out. Using the recent spread of contagious diseases as an excuse, the boatman is persistent to throw him into the sea, much to Tianpeng’s resistance.
Shitou helps Tianpeng to deal with the boatman. In gratitude, Tianpeng swears an oath of brotherhood to Shitou. Tianpeng suspects that Tianying has contracted typhoid fever and is aware that Nanyang immigrants possess an effective medication for this disease. He pleads with the passengers from the first-class cabins for medicine buta wealthy Chinese, Zhang Guangda, drives him away.
Out of sympathy, Zhang Guangda’s new concubine, Bai Mingzhu, secretly gives Tianpeng the medicine. For helping Tianpeng, Mingzhu was violated by Zhang Guangda.It turns out,Mingzhu was abducted by brigands and her father had actually hired Tianpeng to rescue her. After succeeding in doing so, Tianpeng falls in love with Mingzhu, but she was already espoused to someone else.

Quick-witted, courageous and loyal,
Zhang Tianpeng is an adventurer who does not crumble during difficult times.
2. Zhang Guangda (张广达) played by Terence Cao
Zhang Guangda is the second son of the Zhang family.
His idle and frivolous ways made him highly unsuitable to run the family business.
3. Zhang Guangping (张广平) played by Desmond Sim
Zhang Guangping is the eldest son in the Zhang family. Rational, optimistic and responsible.

Nicknamed “Little Stone”, Hong Shi is a cheerful and optimistic chap who works hard for a living. Leaving his hometown at the age of 17, Hong Shi got a job at the tin mine through the help of his uncle and led a thrifty life, so as to marry and to bring his childhood sweetheart Lin Yazi (Jeannette Aw) to Nanyang.
2. Zhang Dong-en (张东恩) played by Elvin Ng
Born and bred in Nanyang, Zhang Dong-en grew up under the strict teachings of his father after his mother died young. Even though his wilful and reckless behaviour often got him into trouble, Dong-en is innately a kind-hearted and righteous man who has no tolerance for the evil.
After witnessing his father’s tough and impoverished plight as a tin miner, Heilong vows to carve a better life in future. As a result, he resorted to unscrupulous methods and climbed his way up to become a tin factory’s supervisor (also known as “Kabala”). His ambitious dream to earn a fortune led him colluding with Zhang Guangda to cultivate opium.

1. Chen Kuan (陈匡) played by Li Wen Hai
Chen Kuan is an eccentric and highly experienced pharmacist who spends most of his time in the laboratory researching on a new drug and speaks to no one other than Huiniang. He later successfully developed a new drug and gave it to his trusted and diligent disciple, Tianying.
Zhang Tianying is Zhang Tianpeng’s younger brother. While he is not as intelligent and confident as his elder brother, Tianying has a kind heart and is a motivated learner. He taught himself the English language and later got to know Huiniang and an old pharmacist, Chen Kuan.
3. Old Madam Zhang (张母) played by Zhu Xiu Feng
Old Madam Zhang has two sons, Zhang Guangping and Zhang Guangda. A magnanimous and understanding mother-in-law to Zhenniang, the old lady is conversely very cold towards her other daughter-in-law, Xiuxiang.

A sweet-looking and hard-working lady, Lin Yazi sings to the tunes of a folk song brilliantly.
Although she appears to be weak, she possesses the dauntless spirit of the Hakka people.
2. Zhang Huiniang (张蕙娘) played by Joanne Peh
Zhang Huiniang was raised in a native Chinese family in Nanyang, following her parents’ early deaths. Intelligent and beautiful, the little Nonya was brought up by Huang Zhenniang (Carole Lin) who took great care of her even after marrying into the Zhang family.

3. Han Xiuxiang (韩秀香) played by Priscelia Chan
Han Xiuxiang is a wealthy, feisty and obstinate rich lady who marries Zhang Guangda. Apart from Zhenniang, everyone from the Zhang family fears of her. Hence, she bore hatred towards Zhenniang and her daughter, Huiniang. After Zhenniang’s death, the elated Xiuxiang took the opportunity to control the Zhang household and soon created a fracas, causing Old Madam Zhang to fall gravely ill.

Cuiying is a young widow whose husband died because of an accident in the tin factory. Feeling unjustified with her poor plight, she oaths to change her own destiny and lead a good life. However, her efforts went down the drain when she met Heilong, who repeatedly toyed with her feelings.
2. Bai Mingzhu (白明珠) played by Chris Tong
Bai Mingzhu, the daughter of a bankrupt landlord, was arranged to marry Zhang Guangda as his second wife. But on her wedding day, Mingzhu was abducted by a bunch of hooligans and has since ruined her reputation. Although Zhang Guangda still eventually married her, the latter faced ridicules from Xiuxiang. Zhenniang was the only friend in the Zhang family she could confide in. In the meantime, Hu Tianpeng persuades her to leave the Zhang family.
3. Huang Zhenniang (黄珍娘) played by Carole Lin
Generous and determined, Huang Zhenniang is a decisive woman who lives by her principles. Unlike most Nonyas, she was taught both Eastern and Western ideals which resulted in her dynamic character - both traditional and open-minded.

When Desmond Tan was 12, he had to travel on a plane by himself and he became more independent at an earlier age. Jeanette makes a trip to India on her own. Elvin Ng went for a month long vacation to Europe, where he derived his inspiration for writing his book. Nanxing likes the simple kampung atmosphere at Penang food stores. Allen Chen went backpacking to Japan while he did tap-dancing.

Hong Shi and his bride, Yazi, set off for Nanyang from their homeland, China. Three years ago, he had gone to Nanyang without her. He returned to get her and they made the decision to settle in Nanyang, despite her father’s objections. On the same ship are two brothers, Zhang Tianpeng and Zhang Tianying. Tianpeng looks for help as Tianying is ill, but to no avail. The sailors want to throw Tianying overboard, as they are afraid his fever may be a symptom of a contagious disease. Tianpeng is grateful when Hong Shi and Yazi fork out all they have to bribe the sailors into letting Tianying remain.
Taking place in the 1920s, Shitou and his newly wedded wife, Yazi, boards a ship that is travelling from Tangshan to Nanyang. On board the same ship, two brothers, Tianpeng and Tianying face trouble with the crewmen. Shitou and Yazi extend their helping hand without hesitation. In gratitude, Tianpeng swears an oath of brotherhood to Shitou. Shitou suspects that Tianying has contracted typhoid fever. Hence, Shitou brings Tianpeng to look for a rich merchant on board who has the cure. Much to Tianpeng’s astonishment, the rich merchant, Zhang Guangda, is his sworn enemy.

Tianpeng tried to vain to stop Mingzhu from marrying Guangda. However, his actions ruined her reputation and he was filled with regret. Guangda heard the rumours and suspected Mingzhu had been violated. He threatened to ask for compensation from the Bais if she proved to be impure. Tianpeng and Tianying received the boat tickets from the Bais as a reward for saving Mingzhu. They met her and Guangda again at the pier. Guangda refuses to give Tianpeng the medicine to save Tianying. However, when Mingzhu intervenes, he reluctantly hands over the powder, but stealthily swops it with a laxative.
Back in his hometown, Guangda marries Mingzhu. Knowing Guangda isn’t a good soul, Tianpeng urges Mingzhu not to marry him. However, Mingzhu’s father has already accepted the betrothal gifts and there is no turning back. Tianpeng leaves and unfortunately, meets Guangda again on board the ship. Guangda humiliates Tianpeng, and Tianpeng takes it all in, in hope to save his brother’s life. Mingzhu stands out to help Tianpeng.

Guangda and Mingzhu arrive at Nanyang and are received by their nephew and niece, Dong’en and Huiniang. Huiniang discovers that Mingzhu has been abused by Guangda and threatens to file a lawsuit against him. Afraid, Guangda promises never to hit Mingzhu again.
Guangda’s nephew and niece, Dong’en and Huiniang, turn up to receive him. Dong’en is amused Guangda has such a young wife. Hong Shi takes Yazi around and tells her the Caucasians rule the place, which is made up of people of different races. Huiniang takes Mingzhu to a hotel and is flabbergasted to see the wounds on her body. Mingzhu stops her from confronting Guangda. Hong Shi and Yazi check into an inn.

When Tianpeng and Tianying set up their business of selling medicine on the streets, a gang of triad members came looking for trouble. In the process, Tianying injures himself and Huiniang brings him to a western medical hall. The novelty of the medicines on display caught Tianying’s attention and he starts to gain interest. Huiniang encourages Tianying to be a disciple of the medical practitioner and he agrees. As a result, Tianpeng and Tianying go their separate ways.
Dong’en and Huiniang visit Chen Kuang and Uncle Wang, who are old-timers in the Zhangs’ medicinal hall. Chen Kuang is a pharmacist who hopes to concoct new medicine the poor can afford. Huiniang’s father, Guangping, often tells Uncle Wang to let the poor delay payment for their treatment. The really destitute ones are given medicine for free. Dong’en has no interest in doing business, but Guangping hopes he can learn the ropes soon. Yazi is almost raped in her bid to find Hong Shi. Huiniang saves her and gets Dong’en to help her. At the inn, Dong’en sees Zhong trying to sneak away. He makes a police report but is arrested instead, because he argues with the Caucasian police officer.

Gangsters turn up to collect protection money. They destroy Tianpeng’s goods, and he urges Tianying to flee. Huiying saves Tianying, who passes out in exhaustion. Tianpeng escapes with help from Mingzhu. He is grateful when she hands all the money she has to him. Huiniang takes Tianying to the shop and discovers he has the potential to be Chen Kuang’s apprentice. Tianying is grateful to her for saving him and giving him a job. Huiniang tells Mingzhu they will have to return home soon, as Old Mrs Zhang’s birthday is approaching. Mingzhu does not look forward to meeting Guangda’s first wife.

Tianpeng subdues the assassin sent by Guangda and runs off injured. Mingzhu assumes Tianpeng is dead. Tianpeng leaves for Malaysia with Hong Shi and Yazi. Zhenniang hires a photographer to take pictures, as Old Mrs Zhang will soon be 60. She tries to pacify Xiuxiang, who is upset that Guangda married again without her knowledge. She knows Old Mrs Zhang was supportive of the second marriage, for the possibility of a grandchild. Neither Zhenniang nor Xiuxiang has not produced a child since marrying into the family.
Guangda’s first wife, Xiu Xiang, threatens to commit suicide as he kept the truth from her of going back to his hometown to marry a second wife. Zhenniang, Xiu Xiang’s sister-in-law, dissuades her from doing so. Xiu Xiang laments that they are unable to bear children for the Zhang family because the Zhang family has committed countless of sins. The master of the Zhang family made a fortune by engaging in swine trading, and Dong’en and Huiniang are not his biological children

It is time for Mingzhu to meet her mother-in-law. Guangda brings Mingzhu home and Xiu Xiang creates a huge commotion again. She splashes kerosene oil onto Guangda and threatens to burn the whole family alive. To appease the situation, Zhenniang steps forward and gives Xiu Xiang a tight slap leaving her jolted.
Huiniang admitted her mistake and was spared punishment. Though Dong’en refused to confess, Zhenniang did not punish him. She merely told him that one who refuses to admit his mistakes will not make good in future. Huiniang and Dong’en got into trouble over a bird’s nest. Xiuxiang tried to stop Zhenniang from hitting the children, but Old Mrs Zhang supported the punishment and even expressed regret that she did not take Guangda in hand.

Xiu Xiang plots to remove Mingzhu from the Zhang family, but is discovered and exposed by Huiniang. Zhenniang asks Dong’en about his earlier learning experience in businessat Xingzhou, but he is unable to give a fruitful answer. On the other hand, Huiniang shares about how much she reaps from it. But Zhenniang believes that Huiniang will not be able to contribute to the family business as she would have to get married someday. Tianpeng and Shitou join hands to make a living while Yazi became a “dulang woman”, panning tin for a pittance.
Old Mrs Zhang cannot decide whether to throw Mingzhu out or not. With Xiuxiang repeating that Mingzhu is a jinx, she worries about Dong’en’s safety. Eventually, she decides to let Mingzhu stay outside for a few days while she consults a medium. Xiuxiang hopes to use the opportunity to chase Mingzhu out. Guangda does not have the courage to defy Xiuxiang.

Cuiying’s husband suffered minor injuries during his mining work but pass away soon after. It is rumored that he had a conflict with Heilong. Tianpeng finds out that the gambling den has been cheating the gamblers off their money. Shitou advises Tianpeng not to interfere with this matter lest he offends the gambling den owners. Tianpeng promises Shitou that he will not lay foot in the gambling den ever again.
Heilong hands the compensation he receives to Cuiying, whose husband, Hua, died in the line of duty. Cuirong quarrels with Cuiying, as she disapproves of the latter providing meals for the miners. The miners set off to the mining area and will only be back during the weekend. Yazi starts her tin panning work with the other women. Cuiying dislikes her and keeps picking on her. She leaves in a huff after being scolded by Cuirong.
Hong Shi panics when he realises Yazi has gone missing. He hears a
gunshot and finds Heilong injured. Heilong claims he had saved Yazi from
being kidnapped. Hong Shi and the others suspect Heilong lied to win
her over. Tianpeng finds out the croupiers cheat, and the miners to lose
all their money and go into debt. He challenges Heilong’s lackey, She.
Though he wins the bet, She makes excuses not to pay him. After one last
round, Tianpeng recoups his capital and asks She to use his winnings to
pay off Shui’s debts.

Dong’en and Huiniang visit the Western Medical Hall and see that Tianying is diligent in learning. He even attends night classes to pick up English for easy communication with Western clients. Huiniang’s admiration towards Tianying increases when he takes meticulous care of Chen Kuang who fell ill. Tianying gets disheartened when he knows that Huiniang is visiting her fiancé’s family. He tells himself to stop his wishful thinking about Huiniang.

Guangping finds out about Guangda’s plan to start an opium farm and sends someone to burn the farm down. Guangda tries to stop Guangping and as both were struggling, Guangping falls down the mountain valley. Heilong goes alone to check on Guangping and strangles him to death. Upon hearing the news of Guangping’s death, Zhenniang suffers a big blow and faints. Xiuxiang uses the opportunity to suggest that Mingzhu cursed Guangping to death.
Mingzhu refuses to obey Guangda, and warns him not to hit her again. Huiniang suspects Xiuxiang and Jinhua of causing the food to turn sour. She tells Zhenniang, whom she hopes will clear Mingzhu’s name. Zhenniang tells Mingzhu that as long as her conscience is clear, she need not feel upset. Guangping arranges for Huiniang to meet Charlie in Singapore. Huiniang develops a good impression of the handsome Charlie, and Dong'en becomes concerned.

Cuiping is touched by Tianpeng’s sincerity and both agree to marry each other. As Tianpeng follows Heilong to ‘Ya Sha’, Heilong looks for a chance to kill him. However, Tianpeng is on guard against Heilong and manages to escape this death ordeal. Tianpeng guesses that Heilong’s attempted murder was because of Cuiping, but he denies. He reveals that he wants to dominate the mine and asks Tianpeng to join him.
Heilong tells Cuiying that Guangda will take her in as a concubine if she is willing. When she goes into the room, Guangda tries to force himself on her. Cuirong and Yazi hear her screams and save her. Cuiying and Cuirong manage to escape, but Yazi is taken into the room by Guangda. Heilong saves Yazi from Guangda’s advances.

Heilong pushes Tianpeng into quicksand when Tianpeng rejects Heilong’s offer to conquer the mine. After the death of Guangping, Guangda seizes the opportunity to take his brother’s business into his own hands. Zhenniang sees through his plan and exhorts Guangda to mentor Dong’en to learn the ropes of running a business. She expresses that ultimately, Dong’en would have to take over the business one day and advises Guangda not to encroach on it.
Cuiying is surprised when Tianpeng agrees to the match and asserts he will respect her wishes. Heilong spreads tales about Tianpeng marrying his old flame, but Tianpeng is determined to go ahead and marry Cuiying. Hong Shi urges Tianpeng to leave after the wedding, but the latter wants to help him repay the debts. Cuiying feels uneasy when Heilong tells her that like Hua, Tianpeng will die, as she is a jinx.

To resist the arranged marriage, Huiniang decides to run away from home and asks Mingzhu for help. Mingzhu admires Huiniang’s courage and decides to assist her. In the night, Huiniang manages to escape from the Zhang family with Mingzhu’s help. However, little did Mingzhu expect that Zhenniang would catch her red-handed.
Tianpeng refuses to work with Heilong. Even though he saves Heilong from drowning in a quicksand pit, the latter pushes him into the pit and tells the others he has died. Guangping’s funeral is completed. Zhenniang is still in a coma. Dong’en forces Huiniang to take a break, as the latter has been tending to Zhenniang day and night. Mingzhu helps out.

Tianpeng escaped death and tries to find his way out of the forest. He decides to follow the sound of streaming water that could possibly lead him out of the forest. He accidentally falls into a small stream and discovers rice grains in it. He is elated and believes that this is the legendary place that is known to be the ‘Rice Storage’.
Peter sees Dong’en hard at work and discovers Yijia had tipped him off about Charlie. Dong’en is happy when Huiniang makes it clear she has no feelings for Charlie and hopes to marry a man she cares about. Dong’en and Huiniang get angry when Guangda and Xiuxiang beat Mingzhu up for interfering in Huiniang’s wedding plans.

Guangda asks Heilong to let Cuiying keep him company. Cuiying agrees, and even dresses in red. Dahe worries when he sees her leaving with Heilong.

Heilong forces Dahe to accuse Tianpeng of killing Cuiying. Tianpeng is taken to the police station. Along the way, Heilong tries to kill him. Chen Kuang is ill, but insists on coming up with new medicines. Tianying waits on him and keeps all the notes he writes. He is sad Huiniang is getting married.

Dong’en and Huiniang want to set up a trap for Charlie Zhang to trick him into signing the deal. On the other hand, Zhenniang decides to make a personal trip down to Xing Zhou to call off the wedding. Before she leaves, she instructs mother Zhang and Xiuxiang to take good care of the pregnant Mingzhu. But Xiuxiang spikes Mingzhu’s food that may cause her a miscarriage.
Zhenniang confronts Guangda, who refuses to admit he did wrong. Tianying is happy when Dong’en hits his face as a result of a misunderstanding; it gives him the opportunity to test the medicine again. He learns Huiniang ran away from her marriage. Dong’en and Huiniang hope to trick Charlie into calling off the wedding.

Xiuxiang’s misdeeds are exposed. In a fit of anger, Guangda physically abuses her and decides to divorce her. Xiuxiang pretends to be regretful and Zhenniang helps her to plead with Guangda. As she kneels before the family to express regret and apologies for her action, thoughts of revenge starts to form in her mind.
Incensed, Guangda beats Xiuxiang up. When Mingzhu tries to help, Xiuxiang stabs at her. Zhenniang uses the ancestral grave incident as an excuse to call off the marriage with the Zhangs. Charlie is infuriated when Dong’en lashes out at him for bullying smaller merchants and using ruthless methods to seal business deals.

After Shitou gets addicted to opium, Heilong instructs Ah She to release him. Ah She deliberately tells Shitou that Yazi sacrificed herself for him as she allowed Heilong to bathe for her. Shitou turns into a fury upon hearing Ah Shes words. When he reaches home, he sees Yazi drenched and thinks she sold herself. Yazi is hurt that he does not trust her.
Huiniang is sad she has to be apart from Dong’en for six months. Zhenniang refuses to let her tag along. Heilong promises Yazi that he will release Hong Shi, but claims Tianpeng has been handed to the police. Heilong had buried Tianpeng in soil, to force him to reveal whom he had handed the incriminating letter to.

As Mingzhu visits the temple with mother Zhang and Zhenniang, she sees Tianpeng in a dire state. He was stabbed and left at the entrance of the temple. Mingzhu asks Zhenniang to help Tianpeng and so he is sent to the hospital. Mingzhu also instructs Ah Yin to send some money over to the hospital for Tianpeng. Xiuxiang finds out about what Mingzhu has been doing for Tianpeng.
Heilong stops Yazi from working and delivers gifts to her house, after telling her Hong Shi is guarding the storehouse for him. She rejects the gifts. Dong’en is sad the miners waste all their money at the gambling den. He meets Hong Shi, who warns that he is being monitored. Dong’en hopes to save Hong Shi. He has no idea Guangda wants Heilong to get rid of him.

Heilong instructs Ah Song to stage a robbery at the mine and let Shitou take the rap. After which, Heilong kills Ah Song and confesses to Shitou that he likes Yazi, and suggests that if only Shitou dies, the helpless Yazi can rely on Heilong for her living. Shitou tries to escape, but unfortunately, his vehicle rams into the lake.
Huiniang saves Dong’en, but Shui falls into the water and dies. Fangpi stops Dong’en from flaring up at Snake, who declares Shui deserves to die. He leaves alone, as Dong’en refuses to go home. Along the way, he is nearly killed by Heilong. Dong’en and Huiniang promise Yazi they will find out where Hong Shi is.

Dong’en announces to the workers at the mine that he is the relative of Zhang Guangda and needs their support to help expose Heilong’s many misdeeds. He also declares that Shitou is innocent and that all of them need to bring Heilong to justice. Heilong sees that Dong’en is opposing him and decides to kill everyone else who opposes him in a fire.
Huiniang worries about Dong’en’s injuries. She had turned up at the mining area because of a dream about him being harmed. Dong’en turns back to confront Heilong. He leaves a note, telling Huiniang and Fangpi to get help from Zhenniang. Yazi refuses to believe Hong Shi masterminded the robbery. She turns down Heilong’s offer of help.

Guangda finds out that Mingzhu has been secretly giving aid to Tianpeng and angrily confronts her. Mingzhu explains that she is merely helping the needy Tianpeng and that there is nothing going on between them. However, Guangda does not believe her and agitates Mingzhu which leads to a miscarriage. Mingzhu is disappointed in Guanda and gives up hope in him
Yet again, Tianpeng fails to see the mine owner, Huang Zong. Just then, Zhenniang turns up to tell Huang Zong how Heilong had killed Guangping. Tianpeng provides further details of what happened. Zhenniang sets off for the mining area with Huang Zong, Fangpi, Tianpeng and Huiniang. Guangda confronts Mingzhu, who suffers a miscarriage. Yazi eats poisonous mushrooms by mistake. Heilong forces her to eat at the marketplace. Hong Shi, who has survived his ordeal, sees them together.

As Heilong burns the workers’ dormitory, he sends people to block the exits so that no one can escape. In the midst of the chaos, Tianpeng and Huangzhong arrive at the scene and Heilong’s plot stands exposed. Heilong hurriedly coerces Dong’en to flee with him, and Tianpeng follows. Heilong wants to kill Dong’en, but finds himself trapped at the lake of crocodiles.
Dong’en and Tianpeng become friends. Tianpeng even agrees to look for new mines with Dong’en, Fangpi, Chun’an and Wanglai. Huiniang is sad she has to part with Dong’en again. Yazi sees the seriously injured Heilong by the lake. She cannot bring herself to kill him and even asks Dahe to help save him. Tianpeng and his entourage encounter a tiger during their trip.

When Guangda knew that the fire that destroyed the Poppy Garden and Opium Factory was the works of Zhenniang, he confronts her with fury. Zhenniang blames it on his own selfishness of desiring to gain benefits at the expanse of others and affirms that she will not allow Guangda to sink deep into his wrongdoings any longer. Guangda starts to harbour thoughts of murdering Zhenniang.
Tianpeng and Dong’en chase the tiger away. To protect Mingzhu, Zhenniang warns the servants and Xiuxiang not to spread rumours about Mingzhu’s relationship with Tianpeng. Guangda is incensed that Zhenniang had ordered the poppy fields and opium factory to be razed. In turn, she rants at him for going against Guangping’s wishes and reveals she knows Guangping was strangled by Heilong over the opium issue.

Dongen gets kidnapped and Zhenniang goes into a fluster and Guangda steps out to help in the situation. However, the mastermind behind this kidnap is Guangda and his real plan was to keep the ransom and kill Dongen. Eventually, Zhenniang sees through his evil schemes and knew that he is lying. Zhu Fangpi saves Dongen and Zhenniang feels utterly disappointed in Guangda.
Chun’an sends someone back to the mining area to get help. Heilong takes her hostage and injures her before running away. Dong’en is overjoyed when Tianpeng shows him the new mining area he has found. Dong’en decides to set up a mining company and make the members of the search team shareholders. Zhenniang gives the Zhangs’ mine to Huang Zong. Flying into a rage, Guangda complains to Old Mrs Zhang, but she gives Zhenniang her support.

Mother Zhang goes back to her hometown to pick a wife for Dongen. Dongen says that as long as Mother Zhang, Zhenniang and Huiniang are happy with the lady, he would agree to marry her. Huiniang becomes exceptionally picky and it seems as if none of the ladies are up to her standard. Dongen knows that Huiniang is unsettled about him getting a wife. Although both of them appear to be siblings, however, they know how they feel for each other.
Zhenniang uncovers Guangda’s ploy and reprimands him. However, she forgives him for the sake of the Zhang family. Tianpeng is reunited with Tianying. He opens the bag of snacks Zhenniang had given him and finds a large sum of money and a letter within. Her hope is that he will settle in Singapore and wait for the mining company to be set up. Tianying tells Tianpeng he likes Huiniang, but must work hard to prove his worth before marrying her.

During Zhenniangs farewell meal, Dongsheng gatecrashes and with Guangdas help, manages to poison Zhenniangs beverage. As Zhenniang is on the ship, the poison takes effect on her and she passes on. When Mother Zhang receives the grievous news, she suffers a stroke and became paralysed. Guangda and his wife takes over the household and forces Dongen to surrender information of the rice granary to him.
Old Mrs Zhang and Zhenniang prepare to head home, as Dong’en’s marriage
has been taken care of. At the farewell banquet, Dongsheng carries out
Guangda’s plan. Zhenniang falls ill while on board the ship and her
condition deteriorates rapidly. When Guangda and Xiuxiang appear on the
ship, Huiniang deduces that they had poisoned Zhenniang. Before
breathing her last, Zhenniang tells Dong’en to take care of Huiniang and
not to inform Old Mrs Zhang of her death. Xiuxiang deliberately breaks
the news to Old Mrs Zhang, who suffers a stroke.

Guangda starts abusing Mingzhu and Dongen and hurts them very badly.
Dongen says that the map that he gave to Guangda is a counterfeit,
Guangda gets mad and locks Dongen up, forcing him to reveal the location
of the rice granary. Dongen wouldnt budge, thus, Guangda forces poison
water down Dongen's throat.
In Singapore, Huiniang learns Guangda has sold the company. Tianying is jobless, and decides to set up a business with Huiniang and Tianpeng. Huiniang urges Tianpeng to help Dong’en and to take Mingzhu away. Guangda promises to help Heilong, but makes plans to get rid of him. Guangda beats Dong’en and Mingzhu up. When Tianpeng arrives, Dong’en urges him to take Mingzhu to the hospital. Guangda locks Dong’en up when he learns the documents he received were fake. He also asks the police to lock Tianpeng in prison.

Dongen has been poisoned but he chooses to keep it from Huiniang, he lies to her that he wants to go back to his hometown to get married. He also tries to match make Huiniang and Tianying. Huiniang gets upset and agrees to marry Tianying as an act of protest towards Dongen as he leaves her. Huiniang has a nightmare about Dongen vomiting a pool of blood, telling her he is leaving.
The new medicated oil sells well and Tianying starts working on a new medicine. While selling his goods, Tianpeng tries to find Hong Shi as well. Yazi gives birth to a boy and Tianpeng names him Dangyong. Yazi believes Hong Shi is alive and will return to her one day. Chun’an sympathises with her for being ostracised because of Heilong and speaks up for her.
